The music of Ralph Vaughan Williams

The course begins with a film about Vaughan Williams’s life, ‘O Thou Transcendent’, directed by Tony Palmer. Each lecture thereafter is devoted to one of the nine symphonies and a selection of other well-known works, many of which draw on English folk song and look back to the Renaissance for inspiration: Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis, Norfolk Rhapsodies, In the Fenland, On Wenlock Edge, Dona Nobis Pacem, The Lark Ascending. There will also be an opportunity to consider Vaughan Williams’s contribution to the English Hymnal and his work with amateur choral societies.
