This 10 week course will survey the music of Haydn and Mozart in the mid to late 18th century.

10 weeks. Tuesday afternoons (2-4 pm). 8th October till 17th December (no lecture on 29th October)

1. An outline of Haydn’s life including the first part of a film: ‘In Search of Haydn’ (Grabsky, 2012),cello concerto in C major

2. Haydn’s early symphonies for Esterhaza and the Paris symphonies. Part 2 of the film ‘In search of Haydn’

3. Haydn in London in the 1790s: symphonies written for the Salomon concerts

4. ‘A new and special way’ – Haydn’s op. 33 string quartets

5. Lecture/Recital: string quartets op. 20 No. 4 and  op. 71 No. 1

6. An outline of Mozart’s life including the BBC film from the Great Composers series, music for keyboard

7. Mozart and the concerto: works for piano and clarinet

8. Opera: The Magic Flute

9. Opera: Don Giovanni

10. Mozart’s Requiem
