Shostakovich (1906-75)

Shostakovich composed a series of symphonies, string quartets, operas and film scores. Although his music is now universally celebrated, in his day some of his compositions were deemed too progressive for the communist regime (Stalin famously walked out before the end of a performance of the opera’ Lady Macbeth’).  Shostakovich’s response was to write in a more conservative style but one which often carried a coded criticism of the political regime.
